THAT'S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR
One Friday morning, the class was roaring with bubbling and noisy excitement. Everyone was talking about the proposed class excursion to Bt Timah Hill the following Monday.

"Can we picnic there?" Porky asked Mimi with hope in his voice.

"Picnic?" Mimi asked incredulously. "How can we picnic on dirty and muddy floors?"

"Gee! It would be a great chance to find more live spscimens for my insect collection," Edison thought happily, taking out a matchbox from his pocket and examining his friend, the spider.

"You will have a friend," Edison said to the spider.

"Now I want all of you to pair up and do a report about our excursion. You will pass up this report two days after we come back, ok?" Miss Goon asked, smilingly. "All right, find a partner now and I will give out the questions."

"Ouch! What was that?" Porky looked in wonder at a paper aeroplane that had hit his head. On the piece of paper was written: Stick with Sam Seng and you'll learn more than you need to know!

"Edison," said Mimi sweetly," will you pair up with me?"

" Sorry, I've already been booked by Louie," Edison said in a relieved voice.

"Then what about me?" squeaked Mimi, looking around anxiously. Most of her classmates had already paired up and the only one left without a partner was Simone. So, Mimi had no choice but to pair up with Simone.

Just then, the school bell rang and it was time for their PE lesson.

That day, Mr Keeran, the PE teacher was arranging for the class to play basketball. He divided the class into three groups of seven to eight people. Group one, comprising the Bookworm Gang, was ready to play against Group two, first.

"Ready?" Mr Keeran asked.

"Yes!" came the eager reply of the bright-eyed childen.

PPPWWWEEEET!

"Sam Seng! Catch!" Edison called out to him, before throwing the ball into his hands.

Good work team! Keep it up!" cheered Fat Ani, after they had scored five goals.

"Give me the ball, Louie!" yelled Mimi excitedly, but Louie, who could not decide whom to throw the ball to, finally threw it to Smarty.

Mimi was slowly fuming inside. Why, for most part of the game, she had barely held the ball more than twice! She was sure that she could help the team win a few points, if only they would give her a chance. Just then, she saw her chance.

"Simone! I am here! Throw it to me!" Mimi shouted breathlessly, waving her hands wildly in the air.

Simone responded immediately," Okay, watch out!"

Mimi was all ready to catch the pass, when she suddenly screamed fearfully," Not so high! You are throwing it into my face!"

But it was too late, the ball travelling at top speed, hit Mimi right in her face!

BASH!

"YEOWCH!" came a cry of pain.

For a moment, Mimi was so shocked that all she could do was whimper in pain. But as soon as the shock wore off, she began to wail nosily.

"My face!" Mimi sobbed loudly in pain and in anger.

By then, the class was already crowding around her.

"Mimi, Mimi, are you all right? I am very sorry," Simone apologised immediately. She certainly had not meant to bash Mimi in the face like that!

"You're mean, Simone!" cried Mimi, who was really peeved, and refused to forgive poor Simone.

On Monday morning, the class set off on their class excursion on the Bird Sanctuary. It was a cloudy and gloomy morning.

"The weather report says that it will rain today," said Smarty, pushing up his spectacles.

"I don't think that will spoil our fun at all," said Sam Seng with a smirk. "We can hrow mud bombs, if it rains really hard!"

When they reached the sanctuary, they all scrambled out, enjoying the cool breeze and the wonderful birds, butterflies and insects around them.

"Hey, look!" someone cried in amusement. It was Smarty, who spotted a red and black ladybird, clinging to a large leaf.

"It is so cute!" commented a delighted voice.

"Yeah! Mmmm.... hey, look! Mimi is wearing a black dress with red dots! She looks exactly like the ladybird!" observed Edison. Immediately, all eyes were on Mimi, who hadn't said a word throughout the whole trip.

"Stop it!" she pouted angrily. She was still in a bad mood. She knew she hadn't been very nice to Simone, but she didn't like saying 'sorry'.

She moved away from the rest who had all become uncomfortable, and silently walked behind the large trees.

"Nobody cares for me. Nobody even notices when I am not with them," Mimi thought sadly, feeling sorry for herself.

Just as she was thinking of rejoining her friends, her foot caught on something and Mimi fell with a frightened yell.

"Oh... my knees are hurt!" she sobbed, looking at a small cut on her knees.

Then, a strange feeling came over her and she didn't know where she was. The towering trees with their enormous roots seemed like huge tree monsters that she had read about in fairy tales.

"I am sorry, Mr Tree," she timidly apologised for all the noise she had made.

Getting up on her feet, she thought," I am lost!" The thought frightened her so much, that she started to weep quietly.

All of a sudden, out of nowhere, a large brown lizard leapt out of the bushes and ran across her feet. Startled, Mimi jumped up, and with a cry, ran wildly around.

She ran, and ran, and ran until she was panting so heavily that she had to stop. The dark and gloomy clouds were hanging so heavily in the sky that they looked like they were going to drop onto her head very soon.

"Boo... hooo... sniff! Sniff! I am really lost! Where is Miss Goon? Where are my friends? What am I going to do?" Mimi whimpered, feeling very sorry for herself.

Unexpectedly, she thought she heard a faint noise somewhere in the thick of the forest.

"Is that just my imagination?" she wondered. Nope, it wasn't a dream because the noise grew louder and louder and it sounded like a human voice! Mimi was so surprised and excited that she began to tremble!

"I'm here! I'm here! I'm Mimi! Help me! I am lost!" Mimi shouted at the top of her voice.

Someone was scrambling among the bushes and seemed to be coming in her direction. YES! Someone had come!

Then, surprise of all surprises - whose head should pop up from behind the trees?

"Simone! It's you!" Mimi exclaimed.

"We have all been looking for you! How come you're here?" Simone asked curiously.

"I was lost," Mimi confessed in embarrassment.

"Okay, let's go.... I think it's going to rain soon," Simone said gently.

Together, they started walking towards the rest, but before they had taken more than 5 steps, it started to pour. The bid raindrops came spattering on them unkindly.

"Quick! Run!" Simone pulled Mimi along. They tried to thrash out through the thick vegetation, but instead their hair and clothes got caught in the branches.

"Ouch! The plants are bruising me with their branches! Can we stop and rest? (Pant, pant!) Maybe we can take shelter under that big tree over there until the rain stops," Mimi urged Simone eagerly.

Soon, they were taking shelter under a gigantic tree.

"My hair!" Mimi sighed miserably. Her beautiful, bouncy curls had straightened.

"Ha... ha.... ha.... Your hair looks really funny!" Simone laughed, unable to control herself.

Simone laughed so heartily and without malice, that Mimi, too, bagan to feel ticklish.

"Your hair sticks up... ha... ha.... ha..." Mimi said laughingly. Soon, they were laughing heartily, doubling over in merriment.

"Are we friends again?" Mimi asked timidly.

"We have always been friends, Mimi," Simone said kindly, with a smile.

Suddenly, a bolt of lightning shot across the sky. The thunder that followed, sounded like thousands of tumbling rocks, shaking the whole forest.

"Oh no!" Mimi fearfully exclaimed, before continuing. "We cannot stand under a tree, if there is lightning - we'd better run!

In fear, the girls rushed out into the storming forest. At first, they tried to run, but when they kept slipping into the mud, which was ankle-deep, they began to walk more gingerly.

SLIP! SLOSH! SLIP! SLOSH!

"I am feeling so cold! Brrrr.... Achoo! Oh...." Mimi mumbled as she shivered.

"So am I!" Simone moaned.

First, they ran slowly, but when the sky began to clear, they went a little faster. Faster and faster they went. They ran and ran with increasing speed....

Suddenly, Simone felt as if the ground under her feet was giving way! Frightened, she gave a loud yell, and immediately, something seemed to be pulling her legs down!

"Mi......mi...! Help! Aaahhhhh!" Simone screamed in fear.

"Simone, hold on to me!" Mimi cried, not knowing what to do.

But it was too late, Simone had stepped on some slipery ground which gave way instantaneously. Together with little rocks and the muddy water, Simone went on a wild ride down a slope.

"Mi...mi!" Help!" Simone was completely helpless - she didn't know how to stop at all! All she could do was cover her eyes with her hands.

Thump!

Oh!

Argh!

As suddenly as it begun, the ride came to a sudden stop when Simone landed with all her might on her bums!

Luckily, she did not break her limbs, but her arms and legs were bruised - ouch! On top of that, she was covered with mud from head to toe!

The next minute when Simone looked up the slope she had slid down on, she saw to her surprise and delight, that Mimi was sliding down to join her!

"WHOPPEE!" laughed Mimi, "this was fun!" With a gentle thump, Mimi landed on firm ground. "I enjoyed my ride so much! Are you okay? Do you think we can find our way out here?"

"We are lost again," said Mimi. "I am so tired and my legs feel like jelly!"

"Here, you can use my jacket," said Simone, struggling out her jacket.

"Thanks!" Mimi was grateful for the warm jacket and immediately put it on.

"Look, Mimi, I think I can carry you quite easily and if I took it slowly, I think I can make it up the slope with you on my back - do you want me to give it a try?" Simone look at Mimi.

"ULP! What if you fall?"

"Well, I guess that's s chance we have to take. Either that, or we'll have to stay here for who knows how long! Besides, I don't think you can make it up there on your own, since you're already so tired."

"Okay," Mimi agreed reluctantly,"I just hope we don't fall!"

Brave Simone! She stooped down on the ground and Mimi got onto her back. With a few grunts and groans, Simone started to climb up the slope.

"Try not to fidget, Mimi," grunted Simone. "And try not to relax on me too much - that makes you a whole lot heavier! Boy, this reminds me of the Adventure Camp I went to last year, expect you're heavier than my backpack!"

Just then, Mimi heard someone shouting their names and in her excitement, she suddenly moved and lost her balance! Before either of them knew what was happening, Mimi was rolling down the slope again!

"YEOWCH!" screamed Mimi when she had landed. "My leg! It hurts...." And she fainted!

When Mimi came out of her faint, she was surprised to find herself in hospital.

"Ooohhh... my body hurts!" groaned Mimi, "what happened?"

"Mimi, darling," crooned Mimi's mother "That brave Simone, climbed up the slope again, after you had fallen down and went for help.

"Why do my legs hurt so?" Mimi tried to get up.

"You've fractured your left leg," said Mummy, consolingly,"nothing to worry about - you'll be as good as new in a few months!"

"Sigh! I have such good friends, Mummy - Simone came to rescue me.... And I was mean to her last week. I'll not be like this again!" said Mimi.
